Poetry

Until now Zelimir Peris was known as a prose writer, but with the poetry collection "x" he establishes himself as a poet at full volume. Much of the collection reads like an interrogation of the reach of poetry — a selection, a bow, and a return to the stage, or better yet the street, of last century's poetry that is recited, preferably through a megaphone from an overturned crate, that addresses the reader/listener and activates them. This is poetry built from pamphlets, slogans, the language of everyday life, impregnated with hard data, humor and irony — a kind of rational-lyrical mass of verses that progresses, grows like an avalanche, and then heads — uphill.

Two Marxes

In the — already graphically potent — title we find a paradigmatic unknown. The text itself, however, gives the impression that there is almost no unknown; that in the world of this book everything is thoroughly established and familiar. It seems as though, in some strange way, it has got stuck on the caesura, the comma of Marx's 11th thesis on Feuerbach, and now seesaws on it — pausing for a moment in the sphere of hyper-interpretation of the world, then in the next plunging into the radicalism of the intent to change it. It is hard to disagree, at least in principle, with Periš's diagnosis (as in the poem ‘zadarska’), yet at moments he seems to fall into the trap of Groucho-Marxist reductions along the lines of: there is no problem in the world that an idiot could not solve — take from those who have too much and give to those who have too little.
