Terrifying techno-thrillers about the digital society and the power that takes heads off while hiding inside the digits of our bank accounts. It's not like anyone warned us.

Squaring the circle is the age-old problem of trying to calculate something that cannot be calculated. Today, when debts run our lives, circles are the least of our worries. Bills, much more so.

Croatian Radio HR1 - Radio Crime Drama

Audio Excerpt

Based on the novel Mima and the Squaring of the Rainbow by Zelimir Peris, director Silva Capin produced a radio crime drama featuring Antonio Agostini, Ivan Joncic, Ivica Pucar, Silvio Mumelas, Milica Manojlovic, Lana Baric, Tena Nemet Brankov, Jelena Miholjević, Tvrtko Juric and Nina Violic.

The insecure and dead-end life of an unemployed IT guy changes completely the moment the police recruit him to unmask the virtual identity of someone threatening to bring down a mysterious core system. Meanwhile, Mima and his friend struggle with their own shady dealings, family relationships, and money they can't extract — just as they can't extract themselves from the trap they're gradually falling into.

Techno Detective in Dalmatia: The Scandinavian School of Crime Fiction Has Just Found Very Strong Competition

Jagna Pogačnik

Peris's novel 'Mima and the Squaring of the Rainbow' is definitely worth reading, whether or not you are a fan of the genre, and for several reasons. It is one of the first, if not the first truly coherent techno-thrillers in our literature, in which Peris skillfully uses his profession as a database systems programmer. His Mima is a systems engineer with occasional jobs, always short on money and in debt, so at one point, under mysterious circumstances, the police recruit him to discover who is hiding behind the virtual identity named Dodola.

New Twists for One of Contemporary Prose's Most Interesting Characters: IT Expert Mima Drawn into an Investigation of a Blog About Sexual Perversions

I am sure that not even Zelimir Peris himself, when publishing his novel 'Mima and the Squaring of the Rainbow' about a year earlier, could have expected that this techno-thriller, written for a primarily commercial series, would receive so much critical praise. Critics not only found in it many layers that go far beyond those of a thriller, praising it quite highly for the most part, but it also reached the final round of a literary award.

Zelimir Peris: Mima and the Squaring of the Rainbow

Moderna Vremena

Mima cannot find a job because the place where he lives is economically devastated, corrupt to the skies, and open for business only to dealers and tourism workers. That would make sense if Mima were an Indologist, a metalworker, or something equally "useless" at this stage of cultural-industrial development. Unfortunately, Mima is a systems engineer, a person for whom even a cursory Google search offers tens of thousands of jobs around the world. Given that Mima can barely stand the city, the people, or the customs around him, and given that he has no solid network of friends, the only rational conclusion is that Mima's problems stem solely from the fact that he is either lazy or incapable.

Sancho Panza Against the System

Vladimir Arsenić

Peris has certainly written a very engaging book that can be read in two ways: as a straightforward thriller you will enjoy because it is carried by the lovable character of Mima, but also as a text that raises extremely important questions, the kind that should constantly stay in our minds because they concern us directly. The feeling that our lives are being controlled, not only through the mysterious core system but also through the internet, social networks, mobile phones, and other gadgets, most often seems like collective paranoia, but when we think about it, we see that things are not quite so naive.
